To be a better story teller. Being an introvert and not wearing emotions on my sleeve means I don't naturally practice this.

For my resolve this year, I will have to go outside the comfort zone and start telling more stories. Hopefully, as I do this (and as I progress through our church's bible in a year push), I'll become a better lyricist as a result.

So true...

As the music director I feel like I / my church always has to be looking for the next big thing worship-wise in order to make it 'cool' and 'relevant'. But I guess that simply doing worship with that longing desire to love God is the coolest thing to do.

Really great post :D

So my thoughts on a healthy church would be one where there is a true sense of community, not just the "ahh there are the Jones' but we only associate with them on a Sunday" type of community, nor the surface level chit chat whilst simultaneously looking over their shoulder to find someone of greater interest, but community where people are accepted and loved just as they are, where differing views are welcomed and used to sharpen faith together, where justice is sought locally, nationally and internationally at selfsacrificing levels for the weakest and most vulnerable and where all of this is done not for our good but for the good of all HIS church for the praise and glory of HIS name.

It's a church where healing occurs from the deep emotional shackles that bind us to the physical release from disease and suffering, where words are matched with action and the walls are broken down and the church is released into the community as the curtain was torn and the Spirit flooded the earth.

It's a place of mission and of rest where faith is renewed, people are restored and released to bring salt and light to a broken and hurting world in need.

It's a place that communicates the love of God that goes beyond all of our imagination.

It's not a building necessarily but it is founded on the solid, immovable rock that has stood through the ages and will stand for eternity.

Wendy ... As a new church plant in San Antonio, Texas that concentrates on artists and creatives, we wrestled for some time with the question you are asking. We realized that regardless of our "focus," a healthy church still needs to thrive in the areas that make ALL churches successful and effective. Here is what we believe to be the areas on which to evaluate ourselves on the effectiveness of our church as a whole and as individual members of the body:

Living in worship
Invested in relationship
Vibrant in prayer
External in focus
Intentional in ministry
Teachable in spirit

We see the church as being called out to LIVE IT. To live out the call of Christ every moment of every day. We are still working through how that will be put into practice, but we do believe that we are headed in the right direction.

Blessings,

Steven Barr
